Fields Wins Bassmaster EQ Toledo Bend, Avena & Wheeler Romp at MLF Heritage Cup
Two trophies went up this weekend, and the week told us almost everything you need to know about where tournament bass fishing sits in late October 2026.
On Toledo Bend, a 25-year-old Illinois rookie named Ethan Fields outlasted a 131-boat Bassmaster Elite Qualifier field in a weekend that got weird fast — a cold-front turnover gutted Day 3, Fields watched his lead evaporate on the scale, and still walked out with a Classic berth. Up in Manchester, Tennessee, Adrian Avena and Jacob Wheeler closed MLF's Toyota Heritage Cup with the kind of margin you don't see at this level — nearly 25 pounds over second place — and Wheeler quietly won his third straight Team Series title with his third different partner.
Here is what actually happened, and what it changes for the next three weeks of the 2026–2027 bass calendar.
Fields Takes Toledo Bend, Earns 2027 Classic Invite
The Nitro Boats Bassmaster Elite Qualifier at Toledo Bend Reservoir presented by Bass Pro Shops ran October 21–23 out of Many, Louisiana. One hundred thirty-one anglers launched. Only one left with a 2027 Progressive Bassmaster Elite Series — well, actually zero. The Classic berth was the headline prize. The Elite Series berths come later. More on that in a minute.
Ethan Fields of Carlyle, Illinois, won it with 73 pounds, 3 ounces across three days. His daily weights tell the story:
- Day 1: 28-2
- Day 2: 27-4
- Day 3: 17-13
That Day 3 collapse is not a Fields problem. It was a lake problem. A pre-event cold front triggered a turnover that scrambled Toledo Bend's upper end, and by Friday morning the shad schools Fields had been chasing had scattered into tougher-to-fish timber. He weighed 17 pounds and change and walked to the stage genuinely expecting to lose.
"I was confident that I didn't have it," Fields said. "17 pounds on this lake — there's no way. This is so incredible."
He had it. Buddy Benson of Dahlonega, Georgia, finished second at 70-12. Jace Lindsay of Beckville, Texas, took third at 69-1. Fields earned $71,317 and the invite to the 2027 Bassmaster Classic at Lake Hartwell (March 19–21). Ty Faber of Pagosa Springs, Colorado, took Big Bass with a 9-pound Toledo Bend bruiser and $500 from Phoenix Boats.
The Fields Pattern
Fields fished a creek north of Pendleton Bridge, running laps between timber flats and docks and leaning on two baits that have become the quiet standard for pressured southern fisheries this fall:
- A Hideup Coike Fullcast rigged on a 1/0 BKK Hyperlatch treble with a 1/8-ounce weight — a glide-bait presentation he worked for cruising bass hunting gizzard shad.
- A jighead minnow with a Big Bite Baits Spotlight Minnow on 1/4- or 3/8-ounce heads for the forward-facing-sonar follow-ups when the glide drew a look but not a bite.
It's a workmanlike spread. Nothing exotic. The win came from reading one specific window — bass cruising banks between timber and dock lines — and committing to it for 48 hours before the lake flipped on him.
The EQ Points Race After Toledo Bend
Toledo Bend was event two of three in the 2026 Bassmaster Elite Qualifier series. The top 10 in combined points across all three events earn 2027 Elite Series berths. Here's where it stands after Toledo Bend, with one event left:
| Rank | Angler | Hometown | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Kaden Buchmann | Troutman, NC | 244 |
| 2 | Brody Robison | Dawson, AL | 239 |
| 3 | Brennan Flick | West Monroe, LA | 223 |
| 4 | Peyton Harris | Birmingham, AL | 221 |
| 5 | Cody Abbott | Woodruff, SC | 220 |
Buchmann, who went wire-to-wire for the EQ win at Norfork in September, held his lead but didn't extend it the way he probably wanted — Robison closed to within five points with a strong Toledo Bend finish. Flick, who entered Toledo Bend second in points behind Buchmann, slid to third but is still inside the comfortable qualifying band.
The whole race decides itself at Lake Guntersville, November 11–13. Forward-facing sonar is allowed there, which matters: Guntersville's grass fisheries have become FFS proving grounds, and the EQ anglers near the cut line (positions 8–15, roughly) will be the ones most willing to swing for the fences. Expect at least one angler currently outside the top 10 to force themselves into the picture with a top-five finish at Guntersville.

Avena and Wheeler Romp at the Toyota Heritage Cup
Over in Manchester, Tennessee, MLF ran its Starlink Team Series Toyota Heritage Cup presented by OFF! Deep Woods Repellents from October 18 through 23. Twelve two-man teams. Three lakes used across the format — Tims Ford and Normandy for the elimination/knockout rounds, Tims Ford's western section for the Championship Round. $560,000 total purse.
The format is unlike anything else in professional bass fishing:
- Elimination Round (Days 1–3): Three matches of four teams each. Top two from each match advance.
- Knockout Rounds (Days 4–5): Three teams per day; top two advance to the Championship.
- Championship Round (Day 6): Final four teams. One all-day shootout. Winner takes the trophy.
Team MillerTech — Adrian Avena of Marmora, New Jersey, and Jacob Wheeler of Birchwood, Tennessee — won the Championship Round with 23 bass for 41 pounds, 5 ounces, a winning margin of 24 pounds, 12 ounces over second-place Team Lucas Oil (Michael Neal and Wesley Strader). That's not a close win. That's a demolition at a level of competition where close wins are the norm.
Championship Round Final Standings
| Place | Team | Anglers | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Team MillerTech | Adrian Avena, Jacob Wheeler | 41-5 |
| 2 | Team Lucas Oil | Michael Neal, Wesley Strader | 16-9 |
| 3 | Team Ferguson | Brent Ehrler, Justin Lucas | 12-12 |
| 4 | Team Star brite | Bobby Lane, Chris Lane | 10-7 |
Justin Lucas of Team Ferguson took the Berkley Big Bass with a 3-pound, 1-ounce smallmouth — Tims Ford is a highland reservoir where a 3-pounder earns a check, which tells you how the fishery sets up.
The Winning Pattern
Avena and Wheeler built their Championship Round on vibrating jigs with soft-plastic trailers — specifically Rapala CrushCity Mooch Minnow and Freeloader models — fished through shaded shallow-water zones: bank pockets, isolated wood, laydowns. They threw a wide net rather than milking individual spots.
"Today was all about chucking and winding," Wheeler said. "We caught a couple on a minnow this morning, but then we transitioned over to what Adrian was throwing."
Avena added the gear detail: "I was using a 7-foot, 3-inch, medium-heavy Abu Garcia Fantasista X with Abu Garcia Zenon reel, and we just covered a lot of water."
Translation for a weekend angler: when you're on a highland reservoir in late October and the bite is spread thin, do not slow down. Keep the ChatterBait moving, hit three or four pieces of cover per minute, and let the bass tell you where they are. The fish that bite that presentation are the ones already committed.
Wheeler's Quiet Streak
Here is the stat that didn't lead the headlines but should have: Jacob Wheeler just won his third consecutive MLF Team Series event, with three different partners.
- 2025 Heritage Cup — with Mark Daniels Jr.
- 2025 Patriot Cup — with Dustin Connell
- 2026 Heritage Cup — with Adrian Avena
Any professional bass angler who gets paired with Wheeler in a Team Series format now has an obvious edge. He is doing to the Team Series what he already did to Angler of the Year — making a format look easier than it is because he keeps winning it. His win at REDCREST 2026 in April already made 2026 the best year of his career. He's just not stopping.
What Else Happened This Week
The two big tournaments got all the oxygen, but a few other things worth tracking:
- Phoenix Bass Fishing League Regionals finished Friday and Saturday across multiple regions, including Watts Bar Lake (Spring City, TN — Region 6) and Grand Lake (Grove, OK — Region 5). The BFL regional pathway feeds anglers into the 2027 Toyota Series.
- Six two-hour Heritage Cup episodes will premiere Saturdays beginning February 2027 on Outdoor Channel. If you want to see the Avena/Wheeler Championship Round play out instead of just reading about it, mark the calendar.
What's Next: November Is the Hinge Month
The next three weeks compress almost every remaining 2026 storyline:
- November 11–13 — Bassmaster EQ at Lake Guntersville. The 2027 Elite Series roster gets decided here. Top 10 in combined EQ points qualify. Buchmann is in. Robison is in. Flick, Harris, and Abbott are comfortable. The real drama lives at positions 8 through 15.
- November 18–21 — Mercury B.A.S.S. Nation Championship at Lake Hartwell. The Nation Championship feeds anglers into the 2027 Bassmaster Classic alongside the Elite Series regulars. Hartwell doubles as the Classic venue, so whoever wins the Nation Championship gets a dress rehearsal most of the Elite Series field won't.
After that it quiets down. The 2026 competition year is nearly done. The real noise moves to roster announcements, 2027 schedule previews, and Classic-prep offseason content.
Two trophies this weekend. One won by a rookie who thought he lost. One won by a duo who looked like they were fishing a different tournament than everyone else. That's bass fishing in October 2026.
